G C E A, String by String.
Standard ukulele tuning is re-entrant: the 4th string, nearest your chin, is a high G — higher than the C next to it. That's what gives the ukulele its bright, close-knit sound. Tap a note to hear it.

Step by Step
Tuning a Ukulele, String by String.
Nylon strings stretch far more than steel, so a new ukulele keeps drifting flat for a while. Tune every time you play, and always come up to the note from below.

Start With the C String
The 3rd string is the lowest note on the ukulele, C4 (261.63 Hz). Tune it first and check the others against it.

Tune the E and A Strings
Bring the 2nd string to E4 (329.63 Hz) and the 1st string to A4 (440 Hz).

Tune the 4th String Up to High G
The G is G4 (392 Hz) — a fifth above the C string, not below it. If the tuner reads G3, your ukulele has a low-G string, which is fine.

Check It by Ear
Fret the C string at the 7th fret: it should match the open G string exactly. Any wobble between them means one of the two is off.

Is the Tuning the Same for Soprano, Concert and Tenor?
Yes. All three use G C E A at the same pitches — only the scale length and body size differ. The baritone ukulele is the exception: it's tuned D G B E, like the top four strings of a guitar.What Is Low-G Tuning?
Some players swap the high 4th string for a thicker one tuned an octave down, to G3 (196 Hz), for a fuller, guitar-like bass. The note names don't change, so the tuner works the same way — it just reads G3 instead of G4.Why Does My New Ukulele Keep Going Out of Tune?
Nylon and fluorocarbon strings keep stretching for the first week or two. Tune up every time you play, and gently pull each string away from the fretboard to speed things along. Once they've settled, they hold their tuning well.
